Hillyard started seeking anonymity back in May 1996. He started with the simplest of the anonymous remailers, then moved to others and learned to post through mail2news gateways. He was also testing Private Idaho, a program used with anonymous remailers, using his MindSpring account.
He left plenty of tracks showing his testing, which gave the lie to his July 1996 claims that he didn't know what an anonymous remailer was.
